“The Longest Goodbye” – Understanding Dementia with Compassion
At GO Personnel, we work closely with individuals and families affected by dementia every single day. It’s a journey that is often described as “the longest goodbye” — a gradual loss that is felt not once, but over and over again through each stage.
Recently, we came across a powerful “wish list” written from the perspective of someone living with dementia. It’s a reminder — simple, honest, and deeply moving — of how we can better support those experiencing this condition.
Dementia doesn’t just affect memory. It affects identity, understanding, emotions, and the way someone experiences the world around them. What may seem confusing or untrue to us can feel very real to them.
That’s why compassion, patience, and empathy are so important.
Seeing the world through their eyes
The wish list highlights something we strongly believe in within care:
Enter their world, rather than forcing them into ours.
If someone believes a loved one is still alive, or that they are preparing for a familiar moment from their past, correcting them can cause distress and anxiety. Instead, meeting them where they are can bring comfort and reassurance.
It’s not about facts — it’s about feelings
People living with dementia may forget names, places, or even who we are — but they will always feel emotions.
Kindness, tone of voice, and body language matter more than ever. Holding a hand, listening without judgment, and offering reassurance can mean everything in that moment.
Maintaining dignity and independence
Even as abilities change, dignity should never be lost. Encouraging independence — whether that’s through simple choices, finger foods, or familiar routines — helps individuals retain a sense of self and control.
Equally important is remembering:
Not to talk about someone as if they’re not there
Not to treat them like a child
To continue including them in conversations, gatherings, and daily life
Because they are still the same person — just navigating a different reality.
Supporting families through the journey
Dementia doesn’t only affect the individual — it deeply impacts families too. Watching someone you love slowly change can be incredibly painful and overwhelming.
There is no shame in needing support.
Whether that’s reaching out for professional care, leaning on services, or finding the right environment for your loved one, it’s important to remember: you are doing your best.
The heart of what we do
At GO Personnel, this is at the core of everything we stand for. Supporting individuals in care homes, supported living, and within the community isn’t just about meeting needs — it’s about preserving dignity, building trust, and delivering care with genuine compassion.
We understand that every person has a story, a history, and a life that deserves to be respected and honoured — no matter where they are in their journey.
Raising awareness
Dementia is a cruel and complex disease that touches many lives, yet for some, its impact is not fully understood until it becomes personal.
By sharing messages like this, we hope to raise awareness, encourage understanding, and remind others of the importance of empathy in care.
Because even as memories fade, love, respect, and human connection should never be forgotten.
